GEMINI: Gestalt Mixed Initiative Intelligence

SIFT proposes to implement and validate GEMINI (Gestalt Mixed-Initiative Intelligence), a shared workspace for human-machine intelligence analysis that leverages human and machine cognitive strengths. Our Phase I prototype demonstrates the feasibility of the technology. GEMINIs information exploitation interface translates the users actions into structured knowledge and goals. It decomposes goals into actionable tasks for cutting-edge autonomous agents such as information extractors, image processors, and threat detectors. It then presents agent-generated information within intuitive displays-- using SIFTs Adaptive Interface Management (AIM) technology-- for subsequent analyst interaction. We report cutting-edge synergistic agent behavior (.97 precision, .9 recall for generating expert-quality link diagrams of events and threats), provenance tracking for ICD compliance, and report-ready visualization in our Phase I scenarios. Phase II will extend these proficiencies across domains, measurably validate the approach on human-machine teams, and incorporate hypothesis assessment, relevance modeling, and advanced predictive analytics. In a briefing and demonstration for our military IC transition customers, they determined that GEMINI will have a "huge impact" on their workflow, and they have identified personnel to work with us in Phase II. These customers have already informed the direction of GEMINI Phase II, which will prepare GEMINI for transition to customers who need it.
