Research abstract

Maryland Aerospace, Inc. (MAI), is pleased to present our NimbuSat Weather Satellite solution that we will develop in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and Emergent Technologies (Emergent). Through MAI expertise in spacecraft design, APL expertise in weather sensors and weather data, and Emergent expertise in cluster flight, our solution will provide the Department of Defense (DOD) critical and timely global weather imagery. Our innovative commercial system will deliver weather data as a service to replace gaps that will eventually arise due to the retirement of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). This system will utilize a constellation of small satellites hosting a sensor suite including low-light visible imagers (LLI), short-wavelength IR (SWIR), medium-wavelength IR (MWIR) and long-wavelength IR (LWIR) cameras. In Phase I, we will achieve a CDR level design (exceeding the required PDR level of maturity), enabling us to rapidly develop a fully qualified satellite in Phase II. Our Phase II/III baseline delivers a 6U CubeSat hosting APL LLI and LWIR cameras and Emergent flight software to demonstrate our concept with a NimbuSat pathfinder.
