Research abstract

Sentient along with sub-contractors at Iowa State University, and Honeywell Aerospace will develop and validate the full standalone DigitalClone - Component (DCC) simulation package (the proposed Reliability Centered Additive Manufacturing Design Framework), for assessing tradeoffs in reliability, inspectability, performance/durability and life-cycle costs of parts made through Additive Manufacturing (AM), with first application to an AM heat exchanger (HEX) to be manufactured by Honeywell Aerospace. DCC micro-structure based prognostic simulators are merged with non-destructive testing modules for simulated ultrasonic, acoustic emission, and x-ray inspection, for targeted portions of the component life-cycle, such as during design, manufacture, operation and repair stages with easy visualization of reliability and inspectability metrics. The overall goal of this project is to demonstrate for the first time the feasibility and validation of a Reliability Centered Additive Manufacturing Design Framework for design of components built using AM and analysis of their performance.
