Research abstract

Microcosm and Schafer Corporation propose to design the radar payload and spacecraft for a low-cost Distributed Aperture Radar (DAR) with the following operating modes: 1) SAR Imaging and detection of stationary ground targets, with better than 0.75 m resolution; 2) GMTI detection of moving ground targets; 3) ELINT (passive detection, identification, and location of emitters). The system will operate from 175 to 300 km to keep radar power levels low, and will be capable of changing altitudes as needed, with an on-orbit lifetime of at least 2 years. The operational system will consist of a single mother transmitter small satellite and up to 12 6U CubeSat receivers flying in a 1 km diameter circular pattern about the transmitter.80% of the Phase II technical effort will focus on creating the spacecraft and system design, and defining a low-cost flight demonstration for Phase III, including cost estimates.20% of the effort will be devoted to determining the CONOPS and mission utility of both the demonstration system and subsequent operational system. The goal is to define a system with a high level of operational utility, a reasonable mission lifetime, and very low recurring cost, enabling the ultimate application as a tactical asset.
