Research abstract

An advanced Li-Ion Battery Management System for DOD mission and safety critical platforms. The majority of Li-Ion Battery Management Systems (BMS) for DoD aircraft, helicopter, and directed energy weapons are custom designs for the individual Aerospace platform. This leads to increased cost over the battery life cycle due to the requirement to maintain the production facilities which produce replacement batteries for each Navy program. The DoD must procure and maintain spare batteries for each program because the battery structural, thermal and electrical interfaces are custom one-of-a–kind for each platform. With modular and scalable BMS standardization, it’s possible for different Navy Aerospace pro-grams to establish a joint battery procurement strategy. This would reduce the overall number of re-placement batteries that are required to be purchased. The innovation required to accomplish this goal is to develop a standardized battery module with a robust BMS that would have common electrical, thermal and structural interfaces for multiple Navy Aerospace programs.
