Research abstract

The Vehicle-Based Independent Range System (VBIRS) disruptive technology enables Space-Based Range (Line of Site and Beyond Line of Site high data rate Satellite Ka / Ku-Band communication at a 1 to 50Mbps rate) and Autonomous Flight Termination System (AFTS). VBIRS disruptive technology will substantially reduce Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Test and Evaluation (T&E) cost per MDA tracking exercise and/or interceptor mission by eliminating the need for expensive and aging ground range instrumentation sites that are used to track and/or destroy, as well as as send telemetry data from a variety of MDA launch vehicles, reentry vehicles, interceptors, and hypersonic vehicles across the broad ocean. Implementation of the Space-Based Range and AFTS architectures is critical, as future flight test missions are expected to increase at a higher frequency and unprecendented rapid pace, as well as with additional levels of complexity (will significantly increase mission executions costs). The VBIRS Space Based Range will utilize state-of-the-art components in a reduced Space, Weight and Power (SWAP) unit. Approved for Public Release | 25-MDA-12220 (23 Sep 25)
