Research abstract

The detonation of a High Explosive (HE) initiates a complex sequence of energetic processes that occur over a very wide range of temporal, spatial, and spectral scales. The emission in the very early period represents the brightest radiance for classification and explosive typing. The spectra observed during the rapid and extreme condition changes are also the result of energy transfer complexities after breakout, which contain information that is crucial for the design of novel energetic materials (EM). While there is evidence in DoD and DoE that the early time plasmas can be useful for EM disposal and other applications, there has been little understanding of the processes that lead to the highly excited states responsible for the emission. Emission spectroscopy is the chosen tool to investigate this complex phenomenology. In Phase I, Spectral Sciences, Inc. (SSI) and the Universityof Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC),have developeda prototype spectral signature processing capability to interpret the spectral signatures at all times of the explosion process. Through a synergistic approach combining models by SSI and experiments by UIUC in Phase II, we shall complete a robust processing algorithm and deliver a user-friendly software implementing a consistent protocol for spectral data analysis.
