Research abstract

The sound levels produced by military aircraft continue to rise and place more residents in areas that require noise mitigation. This trend demonstrates that noise must be considered when designing future engines. To accomplish this goal, a tool that can be accurately and quickly predict the noise and performance for modern military engines is needed. As a proof-of-concept, Spectral Energies and its partners developed a low-dimensional, physics-based noise prediction tool during Phase I. This tool has been shown to be accurate to within 2-3 dBs in overall sound pressure level for subsonic and supersonic operating conditions. Currently, the tool has support for three-stream nozzles and aft decks. Future iterations of the code will include support for, 3D effects, imperfect mixing, twin jets, SERNs, and ground effect. Experiments and simulations will be performed to incorporate the new physics and to validate the updated model. Design guidelines for quiet operation based on analysis of our data will also be supplied with the tool. The final version of the noise model will be inserted into the cycle analysis tool NPSS so noise and performance can be predicted for new engine designs. A technology transition and business case analysis will be made and delivered.
