Development of a Hybrid Optical Sensor for Off-Axis Laser Threat Detection and Classification

Our team proposes a hybrid LCMñPiezo Modulated Optical Sensor designed to identify and classify off-axis laser threats in real time. It combines polarization-based modulation using liquid crystal modulators (LCMs) with high-frequency optical path modulation via a piezo-actuated mirror within a MachñZehnder interferometer. This dual-modulation architecture enables the extraction of narrow linewidth laser signatures across the visible to shortwave infrared spectrum (400ñ1600?nm) while rejecting broadband background light.ÝPhase I will culminate in a benchtop prototype that validates the core optical architecture, modulation mechanisms, and signal processing framework. These foundational results will directly inform the design and packaging of a fully integrated field-deployable unit in Phase II, including the implementation of a 2D detector array, standalone embedded control, and networking for distributed sensing. The Phase II effort will prepare the system for pilot deployment, with scalable manufacturing pathways and technology transition plans targeting DoD programs.
