Research abstract

In this Subsequent Phase II SBIR proposal Physical Sciences Inc. outlines the continued development of its electronic infrared (IR) flare illuminator technology that meets the Armys specifications for the M-278 IR flare while overcoming documented safety and reliability issues with the current chemical (illuminant) based IR flare. Specifically, PSI will address remaining elements of technical risk identified and priority ranked with input from representatives of the Joint Attack Munition Systems Project Office (JAMS-PO). The proposed effort extends prior, successful, shock and vibration testing for the electronic flare and addresses the other environmental requirements outlined in the Interface Control Document for the electronic flare: Rough Handling, Leak Tightness, -25140 F Operating Temperature, and, more recently, E3-Susceptibility. Other tasks are dedicated to extending the operating capabilities of the electronic flare by implementing enhancements to the electrical, thermal, illumination and optical subsystems. PSI plans to demonstrate the design enhancements during a tower test at the Russell Measurement Facility and in optional ground launch testing at the Yuma Proving Ground. A successful Subsequent Phase II effort will advance the electronic flare in preparation for a follow-on engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) program leading ultimately to insertion in the Hydra-70 program of record.
