Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. proposes to develop a multimodal system for long-range standoff (50m) trace explosives detection and interrogation with sensitivity in the microgram to nanogram range. The technology will rely on data fusion between multiple sensors, including initial aerial anomaly detection, and follow on standoff explosives mapping and identification.During Phase I, PSI will develop a breadboard standoff, multimodal trace explosives detection system utilizing a three band thermographer for anomaly detection, and an active long-wave infrared diffuse reflectance spectrometer combined with a commercially available close range Raman spectrometer for explosives mapping. The Phase I effort will focus on demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed approach by validating system models with field data collected using trace explosives at mission relevant scenarios and concentrations. An improved detection capability will be demonstrated through the use of innovative data fusion and detection algorithms.Requirements, concept of operation, and a conceptual design for a Phase II prototype multimodal explosives detection system will also be generated.
