Research abstract

R-DEX Systems proposes to continue to team with its academic and industrial partners to mature, test, and demonstrate the Terabit Optical COMMunications (TOCOMM) System, an innovative and groundbreaking technology to enable reliable Terabit per second (Tbit/s) Free Space Optics communications for high-speed air platforms.TOCOMM will combine proven spatial, spectral, and polarization multiplexing, advanced coding and channel equalization, advanced optics, advanced laser communications and state-of-the-art pointing, acquisition and tracking technologies to leapfrog current airborne FSO communications capabilities. In Phase II the team will build on its successful Phase I to construct and test a prototype TOCOMM system and develop preferred protocols. In addition, the team will test the system in a flight environment. The proposed Phase II project is designed to demonstrate proof-of-concept for reliable, Tbit/s optical telemetry from Mach 5+ aircraft at the ranges of interest with Bit Error Rates less than one bit per gigabit of data.Throughout the project, the team will work closely with the sponsor to ensure that the Phase II prototype system meets all requirements for integration with existing AF systems. In the Phase III, R-DEX will work with its strategic partners to further develop TOCOMM for both Government and commercial applications.
