Research abstract

ABSTRACT: Echo Ridge proposes to develop and deliver a suite of prototype EW training tools to support realistic warfighter training in the congested and contested RF environments expected in future operational engagements. The tools consist of an opposing force broadcast capability and an Electromagnetic Spectrum (EMS) monitoring capability which supports both electronic sensing (ES) and electronic attack (EA) functionality. The broadcast tools will support a wide range of commercial and military waveform synthesis and playback capabilities. The ES and EA tools will be based on Echo Ridges previously developed Software Architecture for Intelligent Jamming (SAIJ); an open integrated development environment (IDE) for EW. This capability will offer signal detection, identification, and characterization functions that may be used by warfighters to conduct effective EW. The tools will be based on the extensive use of the latest modern software defined radio (SDR) technology, commercial of the shelf (COTS) hardware, and open-source software, providing a highly economical, and easily upgradable platform basis.; BENEFIT: The results of the proposed research will benefit the EW training community by providing cost effective and realistic EW training tools. It will allow EW-related training exercises to include emulated opposing force broadcasts, and warfighters to train using tools that address modern electronic communications technologies. New EW technologies can be transitioned from the laboratory to the field in a very cost effective manner given the open architecture and COTS basis for the developed systems.
