Research abstract

The objective of the present technical effort is to analyze and design noise-reduction devices and shape modifications of the airframe aft-end to tailor its interaction with the jet as a mechanism to appropriately modify the jet development and reduce the radiated noise, without impacting performance. The proposed research uses a combination of high-fidelity large eddy simulation (LES) in the framework developed at Cascade Technologies and steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models. Following the work on simplified geometries in Phase I, the RANS/LES optimization technology will be further developed and used to explore open and innovative approaches for hot supersonic jet noise reduction by airframe jet plume interaction. A secondary objective of the present research effort is to leverage the LES database produced during the design and optimization process to improve the overall accuracy of the RANS models in predicting jet flows, with enhanced calibration of the RANS models. Ultimately, the RANS/LES optimization procedure will be applied to the complex multi-stream multi-component nozzle configuration from NASA Glenn Research Center .
