Research abstract

The human machine interface (HMI) continues to challenge SOCOM in fully achieving its vision for the hyper-enable operator. Special operators are receiving an increasing number of increasingly complex uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) to accomplish their mission. Traditionally, operators control these UAS with bespoke ground control stations (GCS) that rely on constant manipulation of joysticks & buttons to fly the aircraft and intense optical focus on the graphical user interface (GUI). This hands-on mode of operation significantly hampers an operator’s ability to engage their weapons systems or maneuver over terrain while flying UAS. In addition to these added cognitive and physical burdens, each type of UAS typically has its own unique GCS, necessitating bespoke and laborious training curriculums that prevent operational access to UAS outside a select few who are trained. Natural Language Command & Control (NLC2), provided by Primordial Labs’ Anura software, presents a significant opportunity to overcome these challenges and more effectively incorporate UAS into warfighters’ concept of operations. Verbally tasking drones via natural language is simple and intuitive. This allows for warfighters to more easily employ drones on the move in combat operations.
