Research abstract

Phase II has resulted in a SK-CDP research prototype that provides clinicians with a state-of-the-art balance assessment system for use in research or clinical settings. The system can deliver the SOT to the same standards as current CDP systems but offers significant new enhancements including a new test, the 2D-SOT. The SK-CDP research prototype balance platform is capable of ±20° controllable tilt at rates up to 50°/sec, and instability in two axes as well as translational motion perturbations. Notably the SK-CDP adds mediolateral tilt and translation to challenge side-to-side balance, which is an important predictor of fall risk. The design uses versatile immersive virtual reality (VR) environments and inertial tracking to provide enhanced CDP assessment and rehabilitation therapy to a wider range of patient groups than predicate devices. Specifically, SK-CDP will provide functionality to deliver enhanced CDP tests that extend the test capability to include high functioning groups of patients who are, at present, underserved with existing CDP tests. The proposed sequential Phase II will enhance the SK-CDP system usability and increase the number of assessment and rehabilitation options available on a common modular software and hardware platform. The SK-CDP will be clinically tested using a multi-site trial of both healthy and balance dysfunction participants to test device and assessment protocol effectiveness. We will address modularity to keep size and weight low and facilitate easy transport and set-up. Finally, we will include additional clinical assessment protocols and prepare for FDA requirements to position the SK-CDP for introduction into the market.
