Research abstract

Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) proposes to develop and mature a system for high purity hydrogen generation from greywater and sunlight via a unique combination of photo and electrochemical devices. Several approaches for supporting resource-scavenging in austere battlefield environments with logistic fuel supply limitations were examined. After comprehensive performance review, a photo + electrochemical approach was identified as the most suitable. Preliminary supporting data was used to highlight the potential for onsite hydrogen generation with only greywater and sunlight. A simple approach for utilizing greywater or saltwater was identified. Designs for scaling up to 1 kg H2/day were also identified and detailed in the Technical Approach section. Proof of concept tests and the ability to use greywater have been completed and reduces the risk of failure.  During the proposed Phase IIS, remaining challenges identified in our prior work will be addressed towards a TRL 5 solution. Pathways for increasing specific power and power density will be demonstrated. Maximizing system's efficiency, quantifying greywater suitability, improving durability, scaling up the design for practical applications, developing a standalone system with minimal parasitic power needs, and all balance of plant components, and identifying cost and manufacturing viability will be addressed. Transient operation capability and fast start will be implemented to match sunlight availability. A breadboard prototype will be designed and demonstrated. A standalone prototype design will be developed. This will include controls and balance of plant components. Suitability for MIL-SPEC requirements and footprint required for deployment will also be examined. A failure mode and effects analysis will be completed to ensure safety.
