Research abstract

Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) developed and validated a structured, highly active, low temperature, methanol steam reforming catalyst within this STTR with our University collaborator. The catalyst can reduce the thermal signature in soldier-wearable, reformed-methanol fuel cell power generation systems. The key innovations were: (i) methanol reforming catalysts with high kinetic rates (i.e., turnover frequency) at temperatures <200°C and high selectivity to H2, (ii) the use of very high geometric and specific surface area catalyst supports that maximize reactant-catalyst interaction, and (iii) scalable, lightweight reactor design with high bed utilization (GHSV of  >6,000 hr-1), fast startup (<10 sec.), and adaptability to reformed methanol fuel cells. In Phase I, PCI synthesized and validated supported structured catalyst samples to achieve high methanol conversion, <2% CO in reformate under representative methanol steam reforming conditions, at temperatures <200°C.  In Phase II, PCI will further develop and mature the catalyst and examine long term durability potential over 1000 hours with multiple startup/stop cycles. We will deliver supported catalyst cartridges to C5ISR for evaluation. The goal will be to maintain full conversion with minimum targeted activity of 135 ?mol H2/g cat-sec at low temperatures. The primary market is supporting enhanced soldier autonomy in the field and methanol fueled low and moderate temperature PEM fuel cells. PCI will advance the technology readiness to transition to small- and large-scale applications during the STTR effort.
