Research abstract

Technical Abstract:The Department of Defense (DoD) relies heavily on Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Internet of Things (IoT) networks to ensure operational continuity across mission-critical activities, including logistics, communications, and infrastructure management. However, these systems are increasingly vulnerable to sophisticated cyber threats, such as ransomware, Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs), and zero-day exploits. These vulnerabilities not only jeopardize DoD operations but also pose cascading risks to civilian sectors like energy, logistics, and smart cities that share similar ICS/IoT dependencies.Valorous proposes the development and feasibility testing of an AI-driven, autonomous cybersecurity platform specifically designed to address these vulnerabilities. The platform combines three core capabilities:AI-Driven Threat Detection: Advanced machine learning models trained to autonomously identify anomalies and cyber threats in real-time, reducing reliance on manual intervention.Adaptive Encryption: Dynamic encryption mechanisms that adjust to evolving threat conditions, ensuring secure communication without significant latency.Resilient Data Relay: A redundancy-based approach to maintain uninterrupted communication and data flow by isolating compromised nodes and rerouting traffic.Phase 1 of this project focuses on validating the feasibility of these core components through controlled lab simulations. Research objectives include:Demonstrating accuracy in detecting cyber anomalies in simulated ICS/IoT environments.Validating encryption mechanisms during adaptive operations.Testing resilient data relays for consistent communication in simulated disruption scenarios. If successful, this platform will provide the DoD with a proactive, scalable, and resilient solution to secure mission-critical systems, significantly reducing risks while enhancing operational efficiency. Its autonomous capabilities are particularly suited for contested environments where rapid responses are essential to maintain continuity. While the primary focus is on addressing DoD needs, this technology also has dual-use potential in critical commercial sectors, including energy, logistics, and smart cities, which face similar cybersecurity challenges. Phase 1 outcomes will lay the groundwork for advanced prototype development in Phase 2, ultimately driving innovation in cybersecurity for both defense and civilian applications.
