Research abstract

The objective of this effort is to develop a high brightness directed energy weapon (DEW) with systems components that are used in a replaceable and rechargeable way. This Phase II program will build on the work completed in Phase I of this program, to realize and test a prototype laser system with a replaceable and rechargeable energy magazine. In Phase I FP conducted an extensive research of available cooling and electrical technologies that would allow for a 10+ kW laser to be fielded and operated without other systems or facilities. This would consist of a stationary laser system, that would be operated by connecting a battery and cooling reservoir. The laser could be operated for several shots, then the batteries and cooling would be disconnected, and a new set of components would be connected, allowing for additional engagements. When the laser is no longer needed, the batteries and cooling medium would be able to be recharged and readied for another time. Forward Photonics (FP) is leading the way in direct diode DEW with its proprietary wavelength beam combination (WBC) technology, allowing for the first time kW-class direct diode lasers with excellent beam quality. These highly efficient lasers, when paired with low size, weight, and power (SWaP) systems components can greatly add to the utility and universality of such DEW systems.
