Research abstract

PIVASS is a heads up display tailored for the B-1 / B-52J to provide flight data to the crew. The system adds digital night vision capability and IRIS inclusion for crew members as well. PIVASS will advance the functions and integrate existing aircraft sensors, avionics systems and a heads-up display in an intuitive way. These advances will reduce pilots’ workloads and allow them to focus on the successful completion of their mission, while flying “Heads-Up” in any terrain and in all visibility conditions. PIVASS will enhance the Pilot’s situational awareness (SA), mission effectiveness, and overall safety in all flight regimes, but in particular during night missions, degraded visual environments (DVE), and high workload environments. It is a flexible and modular solution that provides accurate, real-time flight information along with scene imagery on the helmet mounted near-eye displays.
