Research abstract

GonioTech’s Goniopolar Atomic Layer Thermopile (GALTP) sensors provide a cutting-edge solution for high-speed, high-precision thermal measurement in extreme environments. This Phase II effort focuses on further developing and validating these sensors for Department of the Air Force (DAF) operational needs, including hypersonic flight testing, directed energy weapon (DEW) system performance monitoring, and space-based thermal protection applications. Traditional thermal sensors, such as Schmidt-Boelter and Gardon gauges, lack the necessary response time, sensitivity, and temperature resilience required for these extreme applications. GALTP sensors overcome these limitations through their goniopolar ceramic composition, ultrafast response time (~10 nanoseconds), and capability to withstand temperatures exceeding 2000°F. These characteristics enable real-time heat flux diagnostics, which are essential for optimizing thermal protection systems (TPS), validating aerodynamic heating models, and improving DEW system efficiency. The Phase II effort will focus on design refinement, sensor fabrication, and operational validation through ground-based and flight test campaigns. Key objectives include:· Demonstrating sensor integration into relevant DAF test platforms.· Conducting wind tunnel and directed energy exposure trials to assess sensor durability and accuracy.· Performing high-speed aerothermal testing to validate response times and performance against industry benchmarks.· Optimizing sensor architecture to balance manufacturability and system compatibility for DAF transition. Through structured test and evaluation (T&E), this project will enhance the technological readiness of GALTP sensors, ensuring their viability for DoD adoption and future commercialization in aerospace, energy, and industrial sectors.
