Research abstract

Advanced Optical Systems Proximity Operations Measurements System (POMS) for terminal guidance during Autonomous Aerial Refueling (AAR) provides relative position and attitude, all 6 Degrees of Freedom (DoF), in a manner similar to that sensed by a human pilot. POMS recognizes and locates features on the tanker and drogue with a sensor on the UAS and converts the relative location of those features into 6 DoF via an inverse perspective algorithm (IPA). In addition to allowing for hookup to the drogue, the extension from 3 DoF to 6 DoF improves formation flying by sensing tanker maneuvers.
