Research abstract

TIAX proposes to improve the reliability and safety of lithium ion rechargeable batteries by developing detection algorithms, suitable for inclusion in battery management systems, which monitor for formation of in-cell internal shorts, the overwhelming cause of thermal runaway safety incidents involving lithium-ion batteries. These detection algorithms will be based on electrical signals that TIAX has identified which constitute high-reliability markers for the presence of in-cell internal short circuits. Early detection of the formation of internal shorts in lithium ion cells will afford opportunities for preemptive intervention to avert catastrophic failures and their associated consequences.
