Research abstract
Our project tackles a pressing environmental challenge: the massive amounts of whey permeate generated as a waste product by the dairy industry. This lactose-rich byproduct, commonly discarded or treated through costly wastewater processes, poses risks to aquatic ecosystems and contributes to atmospheric gas releases when improperly managed. By transforming whey permeate into 3-methylanisole (3-MA), a versatile molecule that can replace gasoline and serve as a precursor for plastics and sustainable aviation fuel, we aim to bridge the gap between reducing waste and promoting renewable energy. To achieve this, we are developing a genetically engineered yeast strain capable of efficiently converting lactose in whey permeate into 3-MA through a fermentation process. Using adaptive laboratory evolution, advanced bioreactor systems, and collaborative partnerships with industry leaders, we will optimize this process to ensure it is both scalable and cost-effective.Our ultimate goal is to create a circular economy solution where dairy waste is converted into valuable biofuels and chemicals. This will benefit dairy producers by lowering waste management costs, contribute to cleaner energy sources, and provide an alternative to petrochemicals. By reducing atmospheric gas release and promoting agricultural innovation, this project has the potential to improve environmental health, and strengthen rural economies.
