Research abstract

We propose the advancement of the MRL level of a TRL8 packaging platform that today offers both digital and RF photonic communications over links lengths typical of spacecraft and aircraft (< 300 meters). This platform produces photonic components capable of 1 Mbps to 10 Gbps data rates and readily scales to 100 Gbps. Multiple space, mil-airframe and missile/munitions programs are expressing interest in these components, but the lack of manufacturing readiness is retarding acceptance. BENEFIT: The availability of process for building space qualified fiber optic components. Significant savings in time and schedule for deploying fiber optic components.
