Research abstract

PSI will develop a multi-band threat sensor (MBTS) leveraging fusion algorithms for CubeSat-based detection of missile and hypersonic vehicle threats from low earth orbit (LEO).  The use of multiple bands spanning the UV to LWIR supports multi-phenomenology, high probability detection to enable birth-to-death tracking through all phases of flight even for dim targets.  Under the proposed effort, PSI will design, build, and integrate a pair of environmentally hardened sensors.  The performance of these sensors will then be demonstrated through environmental testing, functional testing, and capability demonstrations.  The resulting data will be used to develop and demonstrate an automated target detection pipeline, where the output of the system is low data bandwidth fire control quality track data delivered in real-time to support threat neutralization.  The data produced in these efforts will be used to pursue transition opportunities through programs like the Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor Satellites (HBTSS) and the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA) in conjunction with prime contractor transition partners.
