Research abstract

SAAZ is proposing to advance hypersonic threat detection through a Phase-II SBIR project focused on developing a prototype multi-spectral sensor system optimized for tracking dim, high-speed maneuvering targets. The solution integrates ultraviolet (UV) sensors with dual-band infrared (IR) imaging and event-based sensors (EBS), building on prior collaborations with Lockheed Martin (LM) on IR/EBS systems and SAAZ’s proprietary space-qualified camera experience. Initial terrestrial testing will employ commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) UV sensors paired with SAAZ’s low-latency IR/EBS subsystems in the University of Texas at Arlington’s hypersonic shock tunnel, with future iterations transitioning to custom space-optimized UV components.  The approach strategically balances performance and development efficiency by repurposing existing sensor architectures proven in DoD applications, including a two-color IR EBS sensor developed with LM for hypersonic tracking and Army-funded event-based force-protection systems. This contrasts with inferior COTS alternatives (limited by high latency and motion blur) and impractical fully custom solutions requiring multi-year development cycles. LM contributes phenomenology modeling and data analysis to refine sensor requirements, while SAAZ’s modular UV/IR designs allow spectral band customization without redesigning core readout circuits.  Key innovations include fused UV-IR clutter rejection, sub-millisecond EBS response times, and scalable architectures supporting rapid space qualification. Success criteria center on demonstrating a functional prototype adaptable for MDA operational needs, with Phase III targeting production-ready systems. The project aims to deliver a leap in tracking capability for hypersonic threats while maintaining SBIR budget and timeline constraints through targeted technological reuse.
