Research abstract

A one year Phase II Basic Program and a one year Option Program are proposed, aimed at revolutionary advancement of the current technology used in the high-energy chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL). The Phase II Basic effort directly relates to the Airborne Laser (ABL), and aims to determine the operational pressure limits for the laser system in its current configuration. The work will rely on the use of the DES High Performance Singlet Oxygen Generator (HiPSOG). A Laser that is 1/40th scale of an ABL module will be designed, fabricated, and integrated into an existing HiPSOG generator test bed and tested. Phase II results will provide a firm foundation for the use of a HiPSOG device in COIL applications, and pressure scaling the laser system to high pressures. A High Pressure Laser developed in the Option Program would be mated to a high pressure, close-coupled singlet oxygen generator.
