Research abstract
Directed Energy Solutions (DES) proposes a program aimed at revolutionary advancement of the current technology used in powering high-energy chemical iodine lasers. Our approach is to use a unique generator with a high specific surface area to produce high yields of singlet delta oxygen at high reactor pressures. The compact design of our SOG technology affords reduced generator and transit duct volume to the laser nozzle, and provides the ideal environment for high pressure operation. High pressure Singlet Delta Oxygen (SDO) production will be examined using an existing 1/40th ABL scale Singlet Oxygen Generator (SOG). Generator modeling, analysis and testing are used to develop a high pressure design at the 1/10th ABL scale. Design feasibility is verified with absolute concentration measurements of SDO yield, chlorine utilization and water vapor. The chemical resistance of various generator substrates to SDO and Basic Hydrogen Peroxide (BHP) will be examined. Identification and down selection of lightweight, robust generator materials will be performed.
