Research abstract
To address the U.S. Air Force’s (USAF’s) need for a comprehensive and scalable framework to validate the completeness and accuracy of digital twins (DTs) in real-world applications, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes the development of a new modular, scalable and flexible Comprehensive Intelligent Validation Framework for DTs (CIFRA). CIFRA is based on an innovative architecture that establishes structured processes concerning generation of validation and verification (V&V) scenarios and execution of those generated scenarios. CIFRA separates 1) collection of the simulated DTs’ V&V scenarios, and 2) the virtual testbed supported by AI/ML data analysis and verification. CIFRA contains three main modules: 1) a set of DTs; 2) the virtual testbed; and 3) the set of simulation scenarios. As a result, the virtual testbed runs the DT model with generated V&V scenarios and verifies the output data of the DTs using artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) data analysis algorithms. Therefore, the virtual testbed serves as a simulator, enabling the integration of various simulation algorithms from different domains. CIFRA integrates model-based systems engineering methods for DT V&V, including AI/ML-developed DTs. It also incorporates integrated V&V methods for networks of system DTs and AI/ML techniques to enable fast and efficient V&V. This includes comparing data with the physical counterparts of DTs, as well as with initial specifications and requirements, for complex systems. The CIFRA’s modular architecture and design provide a foundational structure that enables the disintegration of the complex tasks for V&V of complex DT structures into more manageable sub-tasks. This approach facilitates the drawing of reliable conclusions regarding the accuracy of DTs. The main areas of focus can be addressed largely independently of V&V of DT’s: i) model components; ii) configurations; iii) simulation methods; and d) scenarios. By combining this innovative architecture with a solid technological base, CIFRA is positioned to offer a production-ready solution for the testing and evaluation of DTs, aligned with the operational requirements of the Air Force. In Phase I, Intellisense will define the system concept, conduct a feasibility study, and propose a solution for creating a scalable and flexible CIFRA concept tailored to the V&V of various DTs for the USAF. This phase will include establishing requirements, identifying potential DTs as data sources, and evaluating the feasibility of the CIFRA concept based on an analysis of USAF DTs, their requirements, and specifications. In Phase II, Intellisense will develop a fully functional CIFRA Phase II prototype, including modular software subsystems and components, suitable for the V&V of DTs based on the approach developed in Phase I.
