Research abstract

Toyon Research Corporation proposes to demonstrate a very lightweight, power-efficient AESA antenna to meet the needs of small UAVs performing ISR missions over the battlefield. The antenna utilizes a hybrid active/passive architecture that minimizes T/R module count and total power consumption for equivalent radar capability, while maintaining full ESA steering capability. The ESA electronics are also unique by virtue of using discrete devices bump-bonded onto low-cost substrates. This reduces cost by increasing T/R module yield. The devices themselves, utilize a mix of technologies that have been optimized for power-efficient operation. A clever low-power digital transceiver design based on COTs components is integrated into this antenna system providing scalability to various classes of UAVs and flexibility to process signals from a suite of on-board antennas.
