Research abstract

The MPICE metrics framework and data management and analysis tool present an opportunity to significantly improve the planning and execution of stability and reconstruction operations in conflict environments. We propose to develop MPICE-ITS, a scenario-based intelligent tutoring system to train people to measure progress in conflict environments using the MPICE framework and software. Key elements of our approach include scenario-based, application-level learning, coverage of the underlying analytical skills needed to use MPICE, automated assessment and feedback, coaching, capture and evaluation of analysis rationale, and simplified scenario authoring based on our SimVentive and TaskGuide tools and MPICE-ITS scene templates. During Phase I, we will reviewed documents and interviewed subject matter experts to understand progress measurement current practices, challenges, and required competencies. We extracted and catalogued learning objectives, became familiar with the usage and implementation of the MPICE software tool and database, designed the MPICE-ITS software and eight representative exercises. In addition, we developed limited software prototypes to illustrate our instructional approach, and we used the DataMontage time-oriented data visualization tool to present multivariate MPICE data more compactly to support more effective data exploration and review. We also suggested possible enhancements to the MPICE software tool itself. For Phase II, we propose to work collaboratively with MPICE stakeholders and other contractors to iteratively develop an operational version of MPICE-ITS.
