Research abstract

National Energy's waste-powered energy microgrid offers a transformative solution for the Navy's energy challenges. By turning waste into a valuable resource, the system enhances operational resilience, supports sustainability goals, and aligns with the Navy's commitment to innovation and efficiency. National Energy USA proposes a phased, risk-mitigated approach to mature its waste-powered energy microgrid technology. Building on prior lab validation, subsystem integration, and a successful Phase I & II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) effort with the Air Force, this effort will demonstrate and field-test a portable waste analysis solution to identify suitable waste streams for conversion into clean, resilient energy at Naval Air Station (NAS) Key West. This research will help de-risk a future deployment (Phase III) that integrates waste conversion, energy generation, storage, and microgrid controls engineered for military mission assurance, energy security, and environmental compliance.Under an Intergovernmental Support Agreement (IGSA), National Energy can promote solid waste recycling and energy resilience efforts for both NAS Key West and the City of Key West. This unified approach directly supports the Navy SBIR Program’s mission to commercialize innovative dual-use technologies while reducing long-term operational risk, enhancing installation resilience, and advancing energy independence. By aligning municipal and military sustainability goals, this initiative provides a scalable model for base-community collaboration. The City of Key West can participate by providing its municipal solid waste to serve as a feedstock that supports power generation for the Navy. In addition, the City’s existing Transfer Station is already permitted with the State of Florida and Monroe County and would only require minor building modifications to accommodate the proposed recycling and fuel preparation equipment. Working in partnership with the City of Key West and NAS Key West will ensure continuous success of this opportunity.
