Research abstract

This project will focus on the development of an imaging sensor, suitable for in-flight testing, for the non-intrusive measurements of local temperature, pressure, gas concentration, and velocity within the engine flow path of hypersonic flight vehicles.  Development of scramjet engines for aerospace vehicles requires testing of engine components in wind tunnels and, more importantly, in flight. When incorporated into the engine flow path, the proposed sensor will provide crucial data for validating current computational models, and for developing new models for achieving high-fidelity simulations that are important to the scramjet engine designers. BENEFIT: The in-flight imaging sensor can provide information that is used as a feedback for engine performance control.  The sensor has direct application for military engine manufacturers and Federal Research labs.  In addition, this sensor should be of interest to academic combustion researchers, and could be used in environmental and atmospheric monitoring systems.
