Research abstract

Redondo Optics Inc. (ROI), proposes to design, develop, and demonstrate to the Army a portable, stand-off, stereoscopic terahertz frequency-domain (ViewTerahz™) viewer capable of through-the-wall, three-dimensional mapping of urban structures. This proposal addresses the problem of through-the-wall, three-dimensional mapping and scanning of the interior of buildings, dwellings, and rooms common in an urban settings and to characterize the objects inside without exposing the war fighter to harm when entering the structure. In the Phase I program, ROI will demonstrate to the ARMY a bench-top prototype of a ViewTerahz™ system that can detect THz signatures through common urban materials and create 3-D stereoscopic THz images of structures and objects located at a remote distance from the observation point. In Phase II, ROI will develop a stand-off ViewTerahz™ system based on the technical specifications recommended by the ARMY and potential commercial and government customers. Since the end of the Cold War, American military forces have been patrolling foreign cities through out the world. ROI’s ViewTerahz™ system will provide a first level support tool to the military for the stand-off characterization of unknown threats in urban environments as well as for law enforcement engaged in security operations at home.
