Research abstract

This SBIR topic presents two challenges. The first is to define techniques and technologies that advance the science of Accelerated Learning. The solution must be generalizable across complex problem domains. The second challenge is to apply this solution to the problem of insider threats to DoD information systems. Aptima proposes to address both challenges in Phase I. (1) We will draw on instructional theory and research to design a system of tools for developing and retaining expertise in complex domains. We refer to this scientific and instructional design resource as an Accelerated Learning Architecture (ALA). (2) We will design, prototype, and evaluate a domain-specific application of ALA that trains front-line managers about the insider threat to DoD information systems. We refer to this system as RESIST-EM: Resisting Espionage & Sabotage with an Intelligent System for Training Expert Managers. In Phase II, we will refine the Accelerated Learning Architecture and implement RESIST-EM. The project team of Aptima, Anders Ericsson (Florida State University), and Frank Greitzer (National Security Directorate, Battelle) bring to this task: expertise in training research, knowledge of the insider threat, and proven capability to develop training systems. Lockheed Martin endorses this proposal for its transition potential.
