Research abstract

The Coherent Space Threat Mission Impact and Consequences Tool (COSMIC) program includes the proper mix of analysis, technology assessment, end user interaction, systems engineering, concept prototyping, and commercialization preparation in order to derive a cost-effective, operationally-viable solution. COSMIC provides much-needed warfighter capability to support mission impact assessments from single platform and theater-wide space system threats. COSMIC is designed as a plug-in to existing key Space Situational Awareness (SSA) decision support tools currently hosted by our firm at the Air Force (AF) Joint Space Operations Center (JSpOC). COSMIC provides new automated, analytical capabilities to assess the impacts of potential anomalies.  COSMIC includes key enabling technologies including: (1) root cause analysis (cause and effect diagrams) to support overall approach; (2) genetic algorithms to aid in discrimination and learning; (3) incorporation of sophisticated Event Condition Action (ECA) tools to support decision making and automation; and (4) integration of advanced office automation tools (for automated generation and dissemination of mission impact products). A Phase I prototype, final report, commercialization plan, and Phase II approach will be delivered as part of the project. BENEFIT: COSMIC extends the work our firm is doing to support DCS and SSA application development.  In addition to support AF requirements, COSMIC research and development t can have directly applicability to other environment including data mining, semantic web applications,  and innovative genetic programming environments.
