Research abstract
The objective of this project is the design, fabrication, testing and evaluation of an affordable, efficient greywater recycling system for Army mobile field kitchens/sanitation centers. The proposed system utilizes a medialess self-cleaning rotary disk particle separation technology to reduce turbidity and suspended solids, in conjunction with an aerator flotation/surface skimmer to remove fats, oil and grease (FOG), as well as a regenerable activated carbon filter to eliminate dissolved organics, with additional thermal input to inactivate bacterial coliforms. Target recycled greywater effluent performance goals are: BOD 5-day 1000 systems), minimal maintenance/consumable parts, easy set up, operate in basic hot and cold environments (weatherized), and operate safely by non-technical dishwashers. This system will be compared/contrasted with other types of conventional filtration systems. Although the Phase I system will be manually operated, the optional transition phase will allow full automation of the system while maintaining technical performance objectives.
