Research abstract
Combat casualty care can be significantly enhanced by a portable, self-contained system that monitors the health status of the wounded warfighter and provides advanced medical decision-support and alarm/interlock functions. Linea Research Corporation proposes to leverage the emerging Integrated Clinical Environment (ICE) standard to design and build a trauma lifesaver assistant that augments the skills and capabilities of the medic or corpsman in the field. ICE characterizes the patient-centric ecosystem comprising of the patient, clinicians, interoperable medical devices, and information on the patient and therapeutic care plans. The proposed system will be battery operated and will be designed to fit into a medic’s field pack. The ICE-based system will integrate the physiological monitors and the therapeutic devices and generate automated alarms, interlocks, decision-support and record-keeping. The system will monitor vital organ functions for any early signs of deviation from normal physiological state to produce the alarms and decision-support instructions. A rule-based interlock algorithm will prevent the medic from inadvertently setting unsafe conditions.
