Research abstract

The objectives of this program are to develop comprehensive modeling, simulation, and design optimization tool for multi-functional nano-composites of various properties, such as ballistic and blast impact resistance, mechanical strength and durability. We further propose to use these tools, once developed, to design optimum nano-composites for specific Army applications. The fundamental technologies to be developed in this research include multiscale simulation models of the considered nanomaterials, homogenization methods and design optimization tools based on these models. In the Phase I program, we have 1) developed simulation and design methodologies for nanocomposites; 2) developed techniques in the integrated simulation and design system; 3) conducted virtual prototyping for the nano-composite using the developed tools; and 4) fabricated demonstration prototypes for proof of concept, specifically a nanocomposite armor. In the Phase II program, we will further 1) develop multi-scale simulation tool for nanocomposites; 2) develop test plan to validate the simulation result; 3) develop an integrated simulation and design system for multi-functional nanocomposite structure design; 4) conduct case studies for nanocomposite application in ballistic and blast protection; 5) develop nanocomposite physical prototypes; and 6) conduct virtual prototyping and physical testing for nanocomposite protection performance evaluation. The resultant simulation and design system will address major concerns in functional requirements of Army¡¯s ground vehicles, including, but not limited to, mechanical strength, hardness, durability, ballistic and blast impact resistance. The new technology will enhance evaluation and development capabilities of the Army for creating and deploying new innovative materials to meet current and future challenges.
