Research abstract

In this program, we will develop a comprehensive modeling, simulation, and design optimization tool for nano-composites in order to predict, with accepted fidelity, nano-composite behaviors; and to design optimum nano-composites for specific Army applications. We will design, prototype, and test a new advanced composite armor with nanomaterials to demonstrate the effectiveness of using nanocomposites to enhance Army vehicle protection. The fundamental technologies to be developed in this research include multiscale models of the considered nanomaterials, homogenization methods, and design optimization tools based on these models. The resultant simulation and design system will address major concerns in functional requirements of Army’s ground vehicles, including mechanical strength, hardness, durability, ballistic and blast impact resistance, etc. The new technology will enhance evaluation and development capabilities of the Army for developing new innovative materials to meet current and future challenges. The proposed simulation and design system will have the following features: 1) Multiscale modeling of nano-materials; 2) Advanced nanomaterial design capabilities based on the multiscale models; 3) Validated physics at both nano-level observation and macro-level testing; 4) Imbedded manufacturability consideration in the nanomaterial design process; and 5) Function-oriented material design at multiple scales, including nano- and macro-scales.
