Research abstract

An integrated approach will be used to develop suitable modifications to a commercially available diesel engine to achieve the ambitious military diesel engine performance targets. The performance targets include 100 bhp/liter engine displacement, efficiency greater than 40% at best point, and less than 25 BTU per bhp heat rejection, with no visible smoke. The development approach integrates the use of system modeling, in-cylinder computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and engine testing. The scope of work includes the exploration of the potential benefits of fully flexible valve actuation, multi-pulse fuel injection, and optimization of the combustion chamber geometry and fuel injection nozzle.
