Research abstract

The objective of this proposal is to optimize the combustion system for a high output military diesel engine to substantially increase engine power density (>100 bhp/l), improve fuel economy (> 40% efficiency at best point), and reduce specific heat rejection (<25 btu/bhp). The approach used in this study will focus on the simultaneous optimization and matching of injector nozzle design and combustion chamber geometry. In addition, the benefits of a variable valve actuation strategy will be explored with emphasis on late intake valve closing (LIVC).
