Research abstract

The overall objective of the Revolutionary Power Supply for Missiles Phase-II Project, is to determine the feasibility of thermoelectric technology as an electrical power source for USN missiles in order to augment, reduce and/or replace thermal batteries thereby: improving missile range performance; reducing weights and volumes associated with thermal batteries; reducing inspection and maintenance requirements; improving performance at temperature extremes; eliminating supplier limitations; reducing safety and environmental concerns, and increasing overall reliability. As part of the Phase-II effort, a sub-scale system will be designed using commercial off the shelf hardware and the technology will be developed (as needed) to adhere the thermoelectric modules to a motor case and insulate as appropriate. If the optional program is exercised, then a prototype subsystem will be demonstrated and tested.
