Research abstract

The objective of this proposal is to develop a Prognostic Health Maintenance (PHM) system for JSF 28V and 270V Li-ion batteries. This approach extends the current effort “Assessing Useful Remaining Life of Lithium (Li)-ion Batteries after Deep Discharges”, by developing life models for normal operational cycling (between 4.2V -> 2V) of 28V & 270V Li-ion batteries. In Phase II, Battery module and individual cell voltages and temperatures will be monitored during cycle testing data of individual cells and modules of 3 or 4 JSF cells. Several novel approaches based upon impedance processing and nonlinear observers will be developed to extract battery state-of-health parameters from the batteries’ voltage response to arbitrary current loads. A data fusion based diagnostic module along fuzzy / wavelet neural network classifiers will be trained to identify failure modes, degradation types and the weak cells of the Li-ion batteries. Cell level and module level life models will be developed and used in the development of 28V and 270V battery life models. Finally, physics-based electrochemical battery model along with cycle testing data will be used to validate and verify the battery level life models for normal operational cycling. Aggressive commercialization and technology transition plans (Phase III) will be pursued teaming with our industrial partners.
