Research abstract

The current procedure for securing aircraft to a Navy flight deck is both manpower intensive, as measured in “blue-shirt billets”, and equipment intensive, requiring up to eighteen TD-1B chain tie downs per aircraft. As emerging Navy trends and tactics move towards reduced shipboard manpower and increased reliance on unmanned assets, Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) introduces a pathway to new technology which will allow autonomous securing without manual installation of wheel chocks and chains. PSI’s concept uses tug-tractor deployed autonomous vehicles for aircraft landing gear docking and magnetic clampdown to the flight deck. Additionally, PSI’s Autonomous Aircraft Securing Vehicle (AASV) system poses minimal impact to aircraft hardware, ship hardware, and ship operations.
