Research abstract

The concept of decontaminating bilge water by a novel regenerative filtration technology incorporating easy cleaning by Back-Flush and combined with in-line inertial separation device was proposed for Phase I. A scaled down lab testing apparatus for demonstrating the feasibility of this concept was designed and tested for different samples of bilge water. The test data generated in Phase I proved this concept as effective for removing the contaminants. To this end the proposed technology was also demonstrated to be fully regenerable, transportable and simple to operate. In view of Phase I results, Phase II effort will start by design and fabrication of a full-scale test apparatus and complementary parameter tests, automation of the system and functional tests. After implementation of any corrective items (if needed) the design of an operational prototype will be carried out according to specifications that will be formulated with the USMC at a Final Design Review. The project main effort will then continue to the final system design and manufacturing of a prototype, followed by in house testing for performance and durability. At the program completion, after 21 months, the final operational prototype will be delivered to the USMC. The sytem will run automatically so that its operation is simple and the unit will be integral with self-contained power and its design will be geared towards future field testing in phase III. Written operating instructions and a final report will be delivered as well.
