Research abstract

The EFV (Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle) is a self-deploying, armored amphibious vehicle capable of transporting Marines from Naval ships to inland objectives. Despite its capabilities, a major complication lies in water that collects in the bilge of the vehicles. Upon the completion of water operations, the water left in the bilge of the craft mixes with contaminants that have settled there, and is considered hazardous waste. This wastewater is currently suctioned from the bilge and stored for disposal, which is cost-prohibitive. Lynntech proposes a completely portable and low cost filtration and separation system to treat bilge wastewater onsite, designed to be transported into the field by the Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement. The system utilizes an oil water separator and Lynntech’s proprietary electrodeionization technology to separate the contaminants, and is fully capable of being powered by the MTVR as well. Wastewater from the bilges of a platoon of 14 EFV’s can be pumped and cycled through the unit in one half hour. The result will be a concentrated waste product that can easily be transported and disposed of, and clean water that Marine personnel can discharge onto the ground, ocean, or rivers.
