Research abstract

This project will examine the feasibility of using alternative modes of execution on x86 processors as a means of providing protection for sensitive applications. The research will aim to answer two main questions: 1) can alternate modes of execution provide an environment that is suitable for running an application; and 2) do these modes provide a better level of protection or isolation for the application then what is afforded by the Operating System (OS). Part of this study will also include a detailed examination of the differences between processor modes to identify differences in the observed runtime environment provided to an application (i.e. 16-bit vs. 32-bit operand size, physical vs. virtual addressing, etc).
